The Background

Following an epic building transformation, Badger & Co set up home in Castle Street, Edinburgh In the former home of Kenneth Grahame, the author of the Wind in the Willows, in 2016. Its mission was to embark on an adventure into the pleasures of food, drink and all things fun.

The Challenge

With such an important heritage, it was vital that Badger & Co reflected the author's mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality and camaraderie, while at the same time delivering a menu inspired by local and seasonal produce.

Respected design studio, Tibbatts Abel, was commissioned to provide a quirky, modern yet peaceful pub environment to this Edinburgh landmark building.

It was important that they nurtured the venue's warm and welcoming feel, where you could easily curl up with a good book - think Chesterfield banquettes, whimsical woodland creatures combined with trailing floral wallpapers to create a distinctively inviting ambience. But what about the lighting?

The Solution

We were asked to provide a mix of large bespoke fittings coupled with smaller pendants and wall light which would match the quirky and historic eatery perfectly. To do that we felt we needed a mix of rustic lighting, coupled with bright, fresh and modern colours to provide a sense of mystique and fun.

A bespoke geometric pendant made from mild steel in a gold spray finish was chosen to illuminate a private dining booth, softly illuminated with 64 dandelion LED bulbs, which reflected against the wall of bottles behind.

An intimate, cosy dining area was lit with a bespoke three-tier crystal chandelier with a brushed brass frame, blending in perfectly with the mix of brown leather sofas and chairs and dark wood tables.

In the larger, main dining area, two bespoke three-tier multi chandeliers in a mink finish, with 79 downwards facing lamps, take pride of place, holding their own against beautiful huge windows and injections of colour through bright blue seating.

Complementing these statement fittings beautifully is a mix of pendant and wall lighting. Our rustic multi-pendant with five assorted cages huge from a burnt iron pole can be found in the windows of the bar area and entrance, Setting the ambience with filament bulbs.

Over the bar, are our retro, daffodil yellow pendant with globe filament bulbs offering the perfect welcome to any guest. And completing the overall look and our rusted industrial double wall lights, again with filament bulbs, pulling the whole look together.
