With over 1700 restaurants and pubs across the UK and Germany, Mitchells & Butlers has a wide range of brands, which offer customers a great choice of excellent food and drink, fast and friendly service, and excellent value for money.

Keeping its brands fresh and recognisable is important, and providing the correct interior to represent and mirror the clientele for each venue is key to enhancing the pubs.

The Challenge

Chantelle Lighting were approached by JMDA after working with the designers on previous projects. ,Our project co-ordinator and our product manager visited the team at JMDA to discuss the upcoming pub projects, which were The Chilworth, The Swan and The Cock Inn.

The overall brief for each pub was a fashion led, 'my space' image, aimed at the affluent suburban audience. The idea was to allow customers to feel as though they were in their own space, and they could do as they please when they visited their local pub. This may be drinks with the girls on a Friday night, or hot chocolates with the children after school; the interior design and lighting was to incorporate all these needs and create a real setting for customers.

Each pub is situated in a unique location and therefore has a different clientele. Mitchells & Butlers were conscious of this, and felt it was important that all aspects of the design process reflected this. They were looking for a quick turnaround, so Chantelle's short lead time ranges were the perfect place to start.

The Chilworth is located in a suburban village, and needed a contemporary, modern yet warm feel. Whereas, The Swan sits in the beautiful Cotswold, so needed a much softer approach, and the design had to be mindful of the clientele. The Cock Inn was a mix of the previous two; situated in Wishaw, the venue has a clean, crisp feel, with a slightly dark and moody edge.

The Solution

Chantelle has a number of short lead time ranges including its Ombre, Lumiere and Elemental collections. These were used throughout each venue; our team also made alterations to some of the products. We inserted mesh into the Lumiere Grande pendants to give them an almost industrial feel. The product named Fade from our Ombre range was transformed into a wall light in order to match the copper pendant lights from the same range. Aether from our Elemental range was also created in a mink colour for the first time.

Anthony Holly, managing director said, "Making these alterations to our stock products meant that each venue had its own unique look and also had a shorter lead time. We also manufactured a number of bespoke fittings which worked well with the theme and mood portrayed in each pub.

The Result

Both Mitchells & Butlers and JMDA were thrilled with the overall results at all three pub venues; the interior design, including the lighting reflected the brief which was given for each.

The Chilworth incorporated rich colours and finishes, with gorgeous metal lighting which added to the dark yet contemporary feel. The warm amber lighting meant the venue had less of a pub feel, making it much more cosy and almost like a living room.

The Swan had a real country feel, taking inspiration from its location in the Cotswold. With low wooden beams throughout the pub, the feeling was warmth and comfort throughout. Moving away from anything shiny or blingy, and instead returning to much more rich and traditional furnishings and fittings.

The final project, The Cock Inn hosted a selection of lovely bronze finishes, creating the energy and mood throughout the building. Its dark and moody feel was complemented by contemporary materials such as leather and velvet.

Claire West, designer at JMDA said, "Working with Chantelle has been an absolute pleasure; we had a slightly different brief for each venue and they were able to take our ideas and suggest various lighting options which would work.

"Both the products from their individual ranges and the beautiful bespoke fittings which they created enhance the premium country pubs, and really help to create a wonderful setting for diners.
