Charlie Berkeley Club
Mayfair, London

Charlie Berkeley Club, sits within the heart of Mayfair, making it one of the hottest clubs in central London, renowned for its elegance and sophistication.

The concept behind Charlie was to replace Funky Buddha which had been one of London’s top nightclubs since 2001.

Just a few doors down from exclusive restaurants Novikov and Nobu, Charlie underwent a £1 million refurbishment before opening its doors at a star-studded launch event.

The challenge

Interior designers were tasked to create a luxurious and decadent interior inspired by Charlie Chaplin.

Chantelle Lighting was commissioned to create two huge LED ring pendants with colour changing panels, which would connect to the venue’s music system.

Charlie’s owners wanted to ensure that everything about the venue, from interior to drinks menu, took guests on a journey back to the roaring 20s.

One of the main challenges was ensuring that the sound system in the club worked harmoniously with the LED. The owners of Charlie had requested that the colour changing LED could be controlled by the DJ as well as centrally.

There was also then the challenge of the size of the chandeliers and making sure that they could fit through the basement entrance of the club.

The solution

Our expert team at Chantelle Lighting carried out extensive tests on the LED. This involved getting huge speakers to play music beneath the chandeliers to make sure that the LED element wasn’t affected by sound vibrations. Music was left on overnight to make sure that the chandeliers could withstand the sound for a prolonged period.

Chantelle’s LED experts also worked on the programming of the LED to make sure that the sequence of the colour change flowed correctly on all settings.

In order to ensure the ring lights could fit into the premises, they were manufactured in sections and designed in a way that they could fold in half for ease of access.

The result

With details of the refurbishment kept top secret, celebrity guests at the launch event including Amber Le Bon, Sascha Bailey and Prince Cassius didn’t know what to expect.

The owners of Charlie were delighted with the end result and invited MD Anthony Holly and General Manager Lauren Holly to the exclusive opening night.

Paul Chung, owner of Charlie said: “Chantelle Lighting absolutely exceeded our expectations and helped make the ideas we had on paper come to life. The chandeliers are a fantastic feature of the club.”
